6/82: Saturday, October 18 vs. Seattle Kraken

Josh Mahura spoils John Tavares' milestone night with OT winner for visitors.

Final Score: Leafs 3, Kraken 4 (OT)

After fighting their way back in the third period, the Toronto Maple Leafs managed to salvage a point but were hoping for more out of this Hockey Night in Canada tilt with the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken. John Tavares reached 500 points as a Maple Leaf with two goals in the loss.

The winner was Mahura’s first goal after going goalless for 134 games.

Anthony Stolarz wasn’t too thrilled with his team’s compete level and didn’t mince words in the postgame scrum.

The third period showed how the Leafs could and should have been playing all night long. Giving up a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes to a team the Leafs should be able to beat is going to make any fan wonder what happened. But there’s obviously more weight to it when the team’s goaltender says it quite bluntly.

Six games in, even the newer faces should have some idea of what is required and when.

Morgan Rielly scored the Leafs’ other goal, securing six points (2G, 4A) through the Leafs’ first six games.

Despite the loss, there were a few more bright spots for the Leafs.

Despite only having scored twice through six games, William Nylander is up to nine assists with another two Saturday night.

As well, Tavares’ second goal of the night came on the power play, an area of concern for the Leafs to start the year. Toronto started slow in this regard last season and it got better as the games and reps continued so this isn’t as high on the priority list.

Stolarz made it clear after the tough loss what this team needs to work on.

The Leafs host former coach Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night. 7pm ET puck drop.
