I’ve decided on watching two games for Round One. Full disclosure: I spoiled the final scores from both for myself. Gotta love being on the other side of the world!
Carlton Blues 10.15 (75) vs. Richmond Tigers 9.1 (71)
I guess AFL games don’t get much closer than this final score. Going off other games’ totals, this was a low-scoring match for the modern game. The lowest-scoring AFL gams ever were all decades ago.
Western Bulldogs 21.8 (134) vs. Greater Western Sydney 7.11 (53)
An 81-point drubbing. Becuse his match seemed so lopsided, I got curious. The biggest ever margin of victory in AFL history is a difference of 190 - 36.22 (238) to 6.12 (48) - points, set back in 1979 when Fitzroy defeated Melbourne in Round 17.
Interestingly enough, Fitzroy now competes in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
Okay, so I picked the closest and largest victory margins for Round One. Here’s hoping the large margins aren’t as large in the coming weeks.
Through two games for both squads, I’m leaning towards rooting for either the Gold Coast Suns or the Sydney Swans. It helps that they are two of three undefeated teams (With the Western Bulldogs) through two games. But it’s still very early and there’s a lot of AFL left to watch so other teams may yet make strong cases for me to root for them.
